So after the three hour bus ride to
Delphi, up long roads and small mountain passes, we arrived at what has to be
the highlight of Greece, and of course we got in for free. The ruins themselves
were extraordinary and still in great condition. Kudos to the Greeks for making
them and for restoring them. The sights range from the many treasuries of the
city states and to the temple of Apollo, which was the home of the oracle. To
my surprise the site of Delphi also had a theatre and a stadium, which after
being restored, looked amazing. perfect opportunities for group photos.
The next day we got our first taste
of the Greek rail system, don’t worry parents, everything went smoothly and
everyone got there safe (much better than walking.) The Acropolis itself is
very imposing over the city of Athens and once we got up there it offered the
best views in Athens. The Acropolis itself was in bad condition, but you could
still appreciate the temple. “Did anyone say group photo?” has become an almost
trademarkable phrase on this tour so far, and I’m sure you parents will enjoy
the outcome.
Today we visited the site of
Mycenae, which still looks like a stronghold it once was, compared to just the
wall foundations in other places. I was dreading going here only because i had
to do my first speech of the tour. one down, five to go… we had to run down
from the top of Mycenae to visit the treasure rooms and in 27 degrees it was
less than enjoyable.
